| Subject: Effects of Non Verbal Communication Fri Apr 25, 2014 12:13 am | |
| Eye contact, posture, gestures and even how much personal space you give someone are all non-verbal indicators that have an effect on how other people perceive your messages. For example a frowning person speaking in a low tone of voice while slouching is suggesting with non-verbal cues that she may not be interested in the person she is speaking with. Becoming aware of and understanding non-verbal communication will lead to clearer communication of your messages. Sends a Message
- It's not what you say but how you say it. If a school yard bully runs around with a clenched fist he creates fear as children understand that the bully is in the mood for a fight. Looking back in history Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain in the 1940s, is often seen in photographs with two fingers raised to demonstrate 'V' for victory against Nazism -- which had the effect of inspiring and encouraging people during World War II.
Influences Interactions
- Being friendly and making good conversation may not be enough to have a positive effect on your business or social life if your non-verbal communication sends an unwelcoming message. For example if your shoulders and eyebrows are raised, your voice is nervous and shrill, and your body is stiff you are suggesting that you are tense and may make those around you uncomfortable and/or keep them at a distance. Instead show confidence with eye contact, a firm handshake, and good posture.
Creates Intimacy or Intimidation
- The effect of standing too close during a conversation could have the effect of making a person feel crowded, invaded and uncomfortable. If the person interprets your crowding as aggressive and over-bearing, it could even have the effect of making him feel threatened. On the other hand if you're close to someone emotionally (or would like to be) then positioning yourself close to them physically can signify intimacy and attraction. The closeness of your relationship and the nature of the situation determines how much space to give someone.
Non-Verbal Multi-Cultural Differences
- The effect of gestures in North American culture are not always interpreted the same in other cultures. For example a smile in North America shows affection or represents courtesy but in Russia smiling at strangers is often considered suspicious. Also the North American "okay" gesture says that you have money to a Japanese person while conveying that you are rude in Latin American cultures.
